October 28, 2024, Nazi Boni University (Burkina Faso)
We are delighted to announce that Adama Belèm, a PhD student from the University of Nazi Boni, successfully discussed his Doctoral thesis "Agriculture-livestock integration, an alternative for improving farm production" on October 28th, 2024. Mr. Belèm is currently working on Agri-livestock integration within the activities of the EWA-BELT Project.
Dr. Belèm was deemed worthy of the degree of doctor in rural development, specialty food, and nutrition, with the mention "very honorable", after defending his thesis before a jury chaired by Hadja Oumou Sanon, Research Director at INERA/Ouagadougou, and composed of Dr. Mamadou Traoré, Lecturer at the Nazi-Boni University of Bobo-Dioulasso (thesis supervisor), Dr. Bazoumana Koulibaly, Research Master at INERA/Bobo-Dioulasso (thesis co-director), Dr. Guiguigbaza Kossigan Dayo, Research master at CIRDES/Bobo-Dioulasso, and Dr. Vinsoun Millogo, lecturer at Nazi-Boni University.
Dr. Belèm's research work aimed to help improve production and agro-pastoral productivity by optimizing the use of crop residues on cotton farms. More specifically, the aim was to assess the potential and analyze the management of cereal crop residues to diagnose current agricultural-livestock integration practices and the associated constraints and to determine the effectiveness of a supplementary feed based on cereal crop residues in maintaining the physical condition of draught cattle and improving manure production during the lean season.
Dr. Belèm's thesis is also part of the EWA-BELT project, as the theme is the integration of agriculture and livestock: crop production and animal production take place in the same environment, and sometimes this creates conflicts, even though they are complementary activities. As emphasized by Dr. Mamadou Traoré, a researcher at Nazi-Boni University, soil science specialist, and thesis director, "they are entities that need to interact together to produce more interesting results",
Dr, Traoré also underlined how the results of the work are very interesting and point to the shortcomings that are preventing the scaling up of crop-livestock integration practices, in particular the poor management of crop residues. The results of the work suggest ways of making the most of these resources so that the draught animals are strong enough to start the wet growing season.
As a result of his research, Dr. Belèm was able to make several recommendations, in particular to decision-makers and producers, asking for more support for producers in the construction of more adequate storage infrastructure to encourage greater storage of cereal crop residues, and the acquisition by producers of means of processing cereal crop residues to optimize the food value of these residues. Dr. Belèm also had some recommendations for producers, such as the organization of village-level consultation frameworks for the integrated management of agro-pastoral resources to strengthen synergies between agriculture and livestock farming.
Adama Belèm defended his thesis brilliantly before the jury. His scientific work impressed the members of the jury, who declared him worthy of a doctorate in rural development, animal production systems option, food, and animal nutrition specialty, with a very honorable mention.
We congratulate Dr. Adama Belèm for such a significant achievement, and wish all the best for his future!
