We are delighted to announce that Meron Lakew Tefera, a PhD student from the University of Sassari, successfully discussed her Doctoral Thesis on "Sustainable Solutions for Land Degradation and Rainfall Variability in Sub-Saharan Africa: Integrating Traditional Water Management, Agricultural Infrastructure, and Machine Learning Approaches", on February 24th, 2025. Ms. Tefera is currently working on the activities related to the improvement of crop and food protection, within the EWA-BELT project.

Dr. Tefera’s work highlights the urgent need for innovative yet context-sensitive solutions to address land degradation and rainfall variability. Her research underscores how these interconnected challenges exacerbate food insecurity and threaten the livelihoods of millions in Sub-Saharan Africa.

In particular, Dr. Tefera’s research emphasizes that, while land degradation remains a persistent challenge, viable solutions exist through both traditional and modern approaches. Her work highlights the importance of integrating traditional knowledge, agricultural infrastructure improvements, and advanced technologies, such as machine learning, to enhance food security for millions across the region.

As the research demonstrates, sustainable solutions are not merely a theoretical possibility but a realistic goal that can be achieved through collaboration, innovation, and the thoughtful application of modern science. In a world where environmental pressures are intensifying, such interdisciplinary approaches after a beacon of hope, guiding the way for communities to thrive in the face of adversity.

On behalf of the entire EWA-BELT Consortium, we extend our congratulations to Dr. Tefera on this remarkable achievement, which underscores her commitment to advancing sustainable practices in agriculture and land management. We wish Dr. Tefera a bright future and a thriving career ahead!
